Johannesburg’s digital future depends on more than the technology people see—it relies on a strong and reliable network working quietly beneath the city’s streets every day.
To ensure this critical infrastructure continues to support residents, businesses and municipal services, Metropolitan Tech Company (MTC) is advancing its Core Network Rehabilitation Programme, a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening Johannesburg’s fibre network and improving the resilience of the City’s digital infrastructure.
Although most residents will never see the fibre cables running beneath the city, they play an essential role in keeping Johannesburg connected. From municipal buildings and public Wi-Fi to digital communication systems and smart technologies, many of the services residents rely on every day are supported by this hidden network. As the demand for reliable digital services continues to grow, maintaining and upgrading this infrastructure has become increasingly important.
Through the Core Network Rehabilitation Programme, MTC is restoring and upgrading key sections of its fibre network to improve reliability, strengthen network resilience and ensure the City’s communications infrastructure is ready to support future growth. Rehabilitation work is currently underway across several strategic locations, including Randburg, Hunters Hill, Sandton, Alexandra, Martindale, Roodepoort, Eldorado Park and Lenasia, with multiple projects progressing simultaneously across Johannesburg.
Delivering infrastructure of this nature requires careful planning and close collaboration. Before rehabilitation work begins, MTC works with municipalities, utilities and other stakeholders to secure the necessary wayleave approvals, identify existing underground services, and confirm trench routes and depths. This coordinated approach helps protect existing infrastructure, minimise disruption to communities and ensure that work is carried out safely and efficiently.
While some sections of the programme are nearing completion, others continue to progress through planning and implementation as stakeholder engagements and site preparations are finalised. Each completed route strengthens the network that enables communication across municipal facilities and supports the digital services that keep Johannesburg moving.
According to Mr. Nsizwa Kubeka, MTC Network Technician, network rehabilitation is about investing in infrastructure that communities may never see but depend on every day.
