Slovo Park switches on Smart Poles for safer, connected communities

A new era of connectivity, safety and digital opportunity is unfolding in Slovo Park. On Saturday, 7 March 2026, the City of Johannesburg’s Metropolitan Tech Company (MTC) will officially launch the Smart Pole Project on Mpumelelo Street — a transformative initiative designed to improve community safety, expand access to digital services and strengthen urban infrastructure.

The Smart Pole is far more than a streetlight. It is a multi-functional technology hub designed to support residents through a range of innovative features, including high-speed 4G and 5G connectivity with free public Wi-Fi access, energy-efficient LED smart lighting, integrated CCTV surveillance to enhance public safety, and an emergency panic-button system linked to response units. The infrastructure is also future-ready, allowing for the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and environmental monitoring systems.

This initiative forms part of the City’s broader commitment to digital inclusion, improved service delivery and the development of safer, smarter communities.

Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Transport Cllr Kenny Kunene said the project will bring tangible benefits to residents. “With the activation of these smart poles, residents will experience improved visibility at night, enhanced safety measures and greater access to online government services, educational platforms and communication tools. Our goal is to ensure that no community is left behind in the digital age.”

The launch will take place in collaboration with MMC for Transport, Cllr Kenny Kunene, and MMC for Human Settlements, Cllr Mlungisi Mabaso, highlighting the City’s integrated approach to infrastructure development and community upliftment.

According to MTC Chief Executive Officer Thedi Moropa, this initial phase represents an important milestone in Johannesburg’s smart-city journey. The Smart Pole infrastructure has been designed to be scalable and adaptable, enabling the future deployment of environmental sensors and additional smart-city capabilities.

Residents are invited to attend the official launch:

Saturday, 7 March 2026
10:00 – 13:00

The poles are active. The infrastructure is in place. The future is connected.
